All4Green broadens the scope of energy savings to the full ecosystem in which data centres operate, instead of focusing on the energy optimization of single ICT elements, or subsets of the ICT elements making up a data centre.

The novel approach proposed by All4Green specifically fosters collaboration between all entities in this ecosystem with the common goal of saving energy and emissions (hence the name of the project): ICT users deploying services in the data centre, electrical power providers, and data centres cooperating in a federated way.

Temporary 10% - 20% reduction of the data centre energy demand

The project will demonstrate that this collaboration is not only beneficial for the environment, but also economically sustainable, and therefore not limited to customers with a strong green/ecological conscience.

Assessment of technological environments in All4Green testbeds

The effectiveness of the software components implemented has been evaluated, according to the results of research tasks carried ahead. The effectiveness is assessed through the execution of two trial cycles, where we measure the actual energy and/or emission savings obtained by application of the All4Green technology. The trials are run into three physical testbeds, each one representing a specific scenario and a specific type of optimization among the ones made possible by the All4Green components.

All4Green building blocks architecture and interfaces

The All4Green architecture has been divided in three levels:
·         Level III: Contracts represents the components responsible for the contracts handling. A new type of contract (DC-Wide Contracts) was included during this first phase of the project.
·         Level II: Agents are active components that act on behalf of an actor of the All4Green ecosystem to help them achieve their objectives.
·         Level I: Connectors implements the logic required for the agents to communicate with the Energy Providers and Data Centres. 

Data Centre Federation sub-ecosystem components

In this task, we have specified models for federation contracts, agent policies and behaviours for the data centre federation. The purpose of this federation is to aid in the achievement of a better federation-wide energy consumption and emissions reduction, without loss of quality of service agreed between with IT customers, while maintaining the profitability for individual data centres.


2nd International Workshop on Energy-Efficient Data Centres

Today All4Green launched the preparations for the 2nd International Workshop on Energy Efficient Data Centres E^2DC. This workshop aims at joining forces of academia and industry to lower the environmental impact of data centres. It will be held on 21 May 2013 in collocation with the acm e-Energy conference in Berkeley, CA.
