The Energy Provider, the individual or federated Data Centre and End Users of the Data Centre are the actors of an ecosystem which has the option to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions considerably if these actors cooperate through a utility negotiation-based collaboration. During times of unanticipated high energy demand from outside the system, the energy provider requests reduction of activity from the Data Centre, who, as major consumer, is able to reduce its energy demand for a short period of time – for instance by delaying jobs or allocating its workload to less loaded nodes of a federated Data Centre. This is done in exchange for discounts in the energy price charged by the Energy Provider, or as additional energy capacity/quota made available to the Data Centre by the Energy Provider, as reward for maintaining the GHG emissions of the Energy Provider under acceptable quota limits.
